Hi there,

This looks like it might be the most workable gallery for DNN.

I'm after some features that you might be able to comment on:

Comments. To make for an interactive site, I want users to be able to comment on photographs. Comments should be visible somewhere down the same page as the displayed photograph.

Ratings. These are less important for me, but can also be useful for say, a gallery where people are to vote for the best photo.

RSS... or some sort of "Latest photos, Latest Gallery Comments, Top rated photos" module. This can be placed on the homepage and again makes the site more interactive by drawing the viewer's attention to new content. Ratings are in fact not of much use unless one can sort by or pull out the images by their ratings. RSS can make that possible. Pulling this sort of information onto the homepage is highly valuable.

JPG quality on resize. On browsing the sample galleries I notice rather severe compression artifacts on the images. This should ideally be adjustable.

And here's a feature that no one has yet implemented and will make the first person to do so famous: Display of IPTC data (itpc.org). IPTC is the primary standard for image meta-data. It provides the framework for the taxonomy by which images are cataloged and searched. All professional applications such as Photoshop use this, both in Bridge and the upcoming Lightbox. There are more fields in IPTC than one needs in a simple gallery, so I imagine one could have a list of tick boxes to choose which fields to display. Another method might just be to provide tokens for each field and let skinners choose what to display. Even way cooler would be if one could update/append IPTC info to the images even after uploading them. I'm not sure if that can be done though.

The basics should all be made use of: Creator, DateCreated, Description, Headline, Location, Title.

This page http://www.iptc.org/IPTC4XMP/
has relevant information including a schema for download on the right - get the full package there as it has the pdf "XMP Schema Properties for IPTC Core" in it. The rest of the page is about retrofitting IPTC panels to older Photoshops.. ignore those bits.

I note that the gallery is now quite cheap on Snowcovered. I'd definitely pay more than that for any of the above functionality. There are some other galleries around that allow commenting, but none of them do it very well. Your modules tend to be somewhat tidier overall so I'm hoping you might consider these things.

Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

Rob

Rob,

Thanks for the feedback...

Comments and ratings are already planned for the next release.

I know about the compression issues with JPGs and plan to fix that as well.

On the ITPC stuff, I'll take a look and see what .Net exposes and if I can easily get to that information. The next release will be "templated" which will allow for the use of tags throughout...

Let me know if you have any other suggestions...

Thanks,
Russel

Hi again, I sent this link to S. McCulloch as well for his gallery. It has the good word on quality image resizing. Might be useful to get started.
